By the end of 2019, there were more than 400 mass shootings in the U.S. It is the highest number of mass killings in the recent history. Gun violence in the United States needs no introduction. U. S. officials have been trying for years to find a solution to this problem, but the number of casualties is still increasing.

But what if you were able to stop a shooter before he even begin to shoot? One way to do that is through artificial intelligence. Athena Security is doing just that.

Detect potential threats before crime happens

Headquartered in Austin, TX, Athena Security is a cutting edge A.I. security camera startup with more than 95% accuracy to help reduce crimes and shootings. Athena Security uses computer vision and artificial intelligence to monitor and detect potential threats. They analyze a live video stream that can recognize an assailant carrying a firearm, or acting aggressively. It is actually a software that detects weapons. If someone pulls out a weapon, a system can call the police before the actual crime happens.

The system can be applied to an existing video surveillance installation where Athena reportedly will link to the video feed via the camera IP address and use its Cloud-based resources. When a hazardous situation is identified the system issues vocal warnings which can help defuse a potentially lethal conflict event. It also masks the people that it captures on video to avoid profiling based on race and other factors before letting AI analyze the footage.

90% success rate at identifying weapons

Athena uses powerful Nvidia graphics cards together with AI computer vision to analyze the 30-fps video stream and detect the presence of dangerous objects and threatening body gestures. The company claims that the system demonstrates a better than 90% success rate at identifying weapons appearing in a live video stream.

$5.5 million in seed funding

Founded by former Revel Systems founders Lisa Falzone and Chris Ciabarrain in 2018, the company already has more than 50 clients across the world. Athena’s system is being used by Archbishop Wood High School in Pennsylvania and Al-Noor Mosque in New Zealand and many other customers. Company has nearly 1,000 cameras out in the field with thousands more being deployed at schools, corporations and places of worship. In 2019 they secured a $5.5 million seed round led by Pathfinder, which is part of Founders Fund. The deal also had the backing of about 40 angel investors.
